When is IVF the only option left ?
In vitro fertilization (IVF) has revolutionised fertility medicine, but it’s far from being your only option when dealing with infertility. Are you thinking IVF is the only option left for you? Then you should ask yourself these 4 questions first…
Have you done ALL of the tests?
Have you tried everything else first? IVF is not your only option… until it is.
There are so many other options for you to consider first before going down the route of IVF. I’m sure that many of you have explored some of those before you eventually decided it was time to visit an IVF clinic, but I just want to make sure that you’ve tested everything before deciding on IVF being your next step.
Many of the tests that you’ll have with an IVF doctor are testing you to see if you’re a good candidate for treatment (rather than looking for the root causes that have brought you to be there). A proper diagnosis is key to any fertility journey. Infertility is not a condition, it’s a symptom. That’s why you should have all of the testing done first so you can try and look for an explanation for your infertility and start treating the root issue.
Have you looked into these factors…
While lifestyle changes likely won’t treat the underlying causes for your infertility, making positive changes to your lifestyle will increase your chances of a successful pregnancy. Your body has to be baby ready: this means fueling it with good nutrition, taking supplements relevant to your needs, practising good sleep hygiene, managing stress and so much more…
#2 Addressing other health issues.
Are you suffering from other health issues which could be affecting your ability to get pregnant naturally? Being overweight, having thyroid issues, regular infections, etc. can all make it that more difficult for you to get pregnant. Make sure you are addressing these as part of your fertility journey and not as a separate issue.
Getting pregnant is all about timing. You should be getting yourself familiar with when your body is at its highest conceptional point within every cycle so you can increase your odds of getting pregnant naturally. Pay attention to the signs that your body is ready to ovulate. One way you can do this is by checking your basal body temperature (BBT).
You may need hormones to help with ovulation or to support early pregnancy if you have short luteal phases. Appropriate testing will be able to tell you if this is beneficial for you.
Talking to a fertility expert about your issues, and exploring all of your options, may mean that you can get pregnant without having to go through the process of IVF.
IVF is a massive financial and emotional commitment, one you shouldn’t have to go through unless it’s absolutely the only option left.
How long are you willing to wait?
How long have you been trying for a baby? How much longer are you willing to wait before starting IVF?
I know how hard it is for you, especially the longer it takes and you’re still not pregnant. I also know how much you wish that this next cycle will finally be the one where it happens. When nothing seems to be working, it’s easy to think that IVF is the only option left that will help you.
We all have a different time frame that pushes us to make certain decisions.
This is especially so as you age. You start to think about how much time you have on your side in order to explore your other options before starting IVF. If you’re older and trying for a baby, then, of course, this will make you think about doing IVF sooner rather than later for it to have the best chance for success. If you’re younger, you might take more time to explore your other options.
There are time factors that also exist between you and your partner. Are you both on the same time frame on whether or not it’s time to move forward with IVF? Or does one of you think it’s worth spending some more time exploring other options?
You are a team, so both of you have to sit down and decide together that the time is right, that you both feel ready, and that you’ve fully explored everything else before deciding that IVF is the next option.
Want to find out for yourself what’s not letting you get pregnant and what to do about it? Then take these tests! These female hormone tests, ovarian reserve tests and other tests are the first start. They will be able to shed some light on what is going on with your reproductive and hormonal health, and fertility.
You order them online and take them from home – and receive the results 5 days later. If you’d like help understanding your results and finding out what they mean and what you should do, you should book a consultation with myself or one of my incredible Fertility Experts to have them reviewed and a fertility plan created for you.
Do you have any structural issues?
IVF is for sure the next option for those of you who know you have blockages, tubes that don’t work, a missing ovary (or no ovaries), no sperm, and other structural issues. These are the kinds of issues that IVF was first designed to help.
Since then, IVF has gone from a last resort to a first-line treatment. Couples are being recommended IVF treatment for much less. The majority of you won’t be considering IVF because of the issues listed above – so there are still many more options open to you.
So many of you come to me believing that IVF is your only option left, but oftentimes it’s not. That’s why my final question is…
Have you got a second opinion?
It’s not always the case that IVF is the only option. It’s worth getting more than one opinion on what the next steps are for your fertility journey.
Is there a specialist out there who can find and treat the root causes of your infertility, and create a plan that will hopefully support you to get pregnant naturally? Are there other areas, other specialists, other treatments to consider that your fertility doctors haven’t yet discussed with you?
I work with many women alongside their fertility and IVF doctors to guide them on how to get the information they need. Every case is different, every issue is different, but all of you hope for the same ending: a baby. And I hope I can do all I can to help you get there.
