4 reasons you need to detox if you want to get pregnant

Hi, I’m Dr. Marc Sklar, the fertility expert, and welcome to The Fertility Blog.

In this post, we’re going to be talking about Detoxing for Fertility. If you’ve been trying to get pregnant for more than 6 months and it’s not happening, maybe it’s time to think about a Fertility Detox. Keep reading. I’m going to go over the 4 areas you need to Detox for Fertility.

When most people hear the word “detox” they immediately jump to the idea of ridding the body of harmful or toxic chemicals and excess hormones.  And that is one very important aspect of detoxing for fertility.  I believe that there are truly 4 areas of our lives that need to be detoxed in order to improve our quality of life and increase fertility.

Detoxing it’s NOT only about food.

Many of us are holding onto emotional baggage.  We have all this extra stuff that we need to let go of.  Emotional Detox centers on communication.  By clearing the air about how you feel, you can release the weight of the emotions.
Another aspect of Emotional Detox is supercharging your emotions.  Feeling and growing love and connection with our friends and family.  This can be done by simply spending more quality time with friends and family.
Spending time with your partner and truly being present with one another can also supercharge your emotions.  Without the TV or cell phones on, just being together, sharing and spending some time to get your plans on the same page is an easy way to continue that Emotional Detox.

The next type of detox is Spiritual Detox.
Many of us believe in a higher power, a spiritual being, or a connectedness with the universe.  The first step in Spiritual Detox is prayer.  Open and honest communication with that higher power is an amazing way to open yourself up and feel ready.
Another important aspect of Spiritual Detox is meditation.  Meditation is an excellent way to connect with the world around you and with yourself.  It can be centering.  It can open up your communication and honesty with yourself.  And it can set the tone for your day or your whole journey.

Physical Detox is still an integral part of preparing to get pregnant.  Screen Shot 2017-02-14 at 10.51.58 AM

We need to support the liver since it is the organ that helps the body excrete excess hormones and chemicals.  I have a specific Physical Detox plan, The Fertility Reset Detox, that can be done after a round of IVF, or any time you feel your body could use a little reset.

The fourth, and most often overlooked, area of detox is the Technology Detox.
We need to give our brains and bodies a break from the excess stimulus of our devices: phones, tablets, TVs, computers and even videos on how to detox from technology.
The easiest way to implement a tech detox is to choose one day a week to put your phone on silent, leave the TV off, and connect without the use of a device for the day.  This will give your brain a break.  And occasionally, you can take a longer break, 2-3 days, which can be scary.  Try taking those days during a vacation or a long weekend, your body and brain can always use a longer break.
